2009 Eastminster Photos

Here is a small sampling of the 2009 Eastminster Dog show that was held at Keswick Hunt Club in May. Please go to our Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA Facebook page and go to the Eastminster photo album for more photos. Special thanks to Mary Motley Kalergis for the photos and to Ginny Semmes, Peggy Augustus, Pattie Boden and Lynne Goldman for organizing and supporting the event. Can't wait until 2010!

Training advice and problem sovling

Thank you John for inviting me to be a part of the CASPCA Blog. I am new to this but hope to offer assistance for those with questions about dog issues. I have worked closely with CASPCA for many years and volunteer my time to teach the CASPCA basic obedience class. Our latest family member came from CASPCA about one year ago. Pokey was a scared little puppy that tried to bite when he was held. We took him in as a foster, helped him to overcome his fears and of course invited him to spend his life with us, our five dogs and three cats. Behavioral issues can be overcome with patience and positive association. Please seek help and advice before you give up on your dog. There is help available. Please feel free to post questions or concerns that you might have and I'll see what I can do to help.

Support the SPCA by getting a professional portrait of your pet

Here is a chance for you to support the SPCA and receive a professional portrait of your pet(s)!

On Friday & Saturday, June 19th & 20th, Cunningham Photography is going to the dogs…and cats..and any other animal you may have as your pet(s)*. This special event called “Pet Quick Takes” gives you an opportunity to have professional studio portrait(s) taken of your pet(s). “Pet Quick Takes” is being held at the Cunningham Photography studio near Target off Proffit Rd.

The SPCA will receive a portion of the proceeds from your participation in this event. Call the studio for details at 434-973-3271. The photo sessions are by appointment only; you can reserve a photo session when you call. $25 will be donated to the SPCA from the $49 setting fee required for the 10-20 minute session. You will receive a free 5x7 and 2-4x5 prints by mail. The digital images can be viewed at the studio.

Additional portraits and other items can be purchased during viewing. The name “Quick Takes” is used because you can have your pet(s) photographed, view the images and order your pictures in one hour or less. “Quick” doesn’t mean that the photo session will be short or done quick, but the studio will be much busier than usual. The number of sessions will be limited so you need to call “quickly” while there is still availability.

If you have an unusual species of pet, please let the studio know when you call for an appointment. (Sorry no birds please.) The number is 434-973-3271.

Rochelle is looking for the right home

Rochelle is a little 12 week old Shih Tzu pup who was brought here by a good Samaritan because her owner wasn't going to treat her injuries. At the time she had a pelvic fracture and a large open wound on a most of her back. Since being here and helping her through the major pain we have discovered that the injury has caused permanent paralysis. She has no use of her hind end and little control over her bladder and bowels. But when you see this little girl scoot around with her two very healthy front legs you will realize why we are now trying to find her a responsible loving home. Eventually she will need a cart but for the first year, until she is grown, she will need special care as to not allow her hind legs to get sores that may become infected. If you are interested in Rochelle then please stop in to the SPCA and ask about speaking to someone on our medical team about the specialized care she will need. But know this now, that once you meet Rochelle you will soon fall in love with her big brown eyes and her constant licking, that you may not be able to resist bringing her home.

Rosanna, given a second chance.

We have recently seen a number of major medical cases at the SPCA but none that touched our hearts like Rosanna. Rosanna was near death, had major head trauma, a dislocated jaw and was having seizures. In most shelters she would have been Euthanized but our staff saw a dog that needed help and went to work. It was touch and go if she was going to make it through the night but because of our dedicated medical team she made it! Today, Rosanna is blind from the severe scull fracture she suffered but she is a beautiful happy girl who only wants to give and receive love.

Without donations and the support of the public, the SPCA wouldn't have the medical program that allows us to save lost pets like Rosanna. What if Rosanna was your lost dog that needed major medical attention? Please donate today to help save a life, it could be your pet's life you are saving.

Hope, will you help?

Hope was suffering in great pain when she came to the SPCA. She had been hit by a car and was left for dead with a shattered pelvis and two broken legs. In most shelters Hope wouldn't have had much of a chance but at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA she does. We never gave up on Hope and we hope you won't either. She has weeks of rehabilitation and one surgery still ahead of her, please give to help out hope and other dogs like her. Without your support we wouldn't be able to continue the life saving work we do everyday. Please give to save a life. www.caspca.org.
