Rochelle gets adopted!!!

Another happy ending for one of our injured SPCA animals. Rochelle was adopted today by Melinda, pictured here holding her. Melinda has a big heart for the little disabled dogs. She has five other small dogs, one other which is like Rochelle and gets around using a cart. Melinda drove all the way from Ohio to adopt Rochelle, because she knew she could give her the perfect home. Melinda and her daughter also volunteer for their local humane society. Thank you Melinda for adopting our little Rochelle. We are so happy for Rochelle and thankful to her as she really touched the hearts of so many of us here at the SPCA (including all the summer campers that spent time playing with her). Rochelle's happy, go lucky attitude, despite all she has been through, brought joy to everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. Thank you little Rochelle for reminding us of why our work here at the SPCA is so important, and I thank you personally for bringing so much love and happiness into my home (as my foster puppy).

Rochelle gets a new hairdo and makes a new friend!

Our little Rochelle (the three month old Shih Tzu puppy that was hit by a car and paralyzed from the hips down, read more below) went to the groomer for a new hairdo.  SPCA supporter and volunteer, Beth Marcus, picked little Rochelle up and took her to the groomer.  After that she went out to lunch with Beth at a local outdoor restaurant, and then went to her new foster home.   Rochelle made friends immediately with the other five dogs in the house.   She loves to run and play with them (video to follow soon so visit our blog again).  Rochelle especially likes her big pitbull friend Mason and said hello to him with a big kiss.  They are such a cute little pair.   A potential adopter is coming to visit Rochelle this week.  After having her spend a few days at my house, I guarantee this little one will win anyone's heart and her disability is easy to manage.  She is a doll baby!

Braveheart is the right name for this dog

Braveheart had so little life left that he couldn't even lift his head up when he was discovered. The owner had passed away and his dogs were left alone chained up in his yard. Braveheart and his sister had no care for close to 3 weeks. We got a call from someone who noticed the dogs and saw Braveheart laying there motionless. It was a Sunday and the staff immediately called the local police hoping they had someone out there to help bring us these forgotten dogs. In no time at all, a nice officer carried Braveheart in to the SPCA. For weeks Braveheart laid in his hospital run only looking up at people and giving a little wag of the tail, that was all he could muster. He had worms, we was anemic, malnourished and had metabolic disease due to his condition. We gave him fluids, antibiotics and special food to help him get back on his feet and monitored him closely. Of course we all gave him love and attention daily.

Today a month later, he is bouncing around, licking faces and he loves his toys. He is a wonderful bear of a dog with such a new lease on life. We are still monitoring him and he isn't ready for a new home yet, but we hope he will soon find a family where he will be pampered and made king of the household. He deserves such a life after the one he came from. Thank you to the staff and to the wonderful officer who helped this beautiful dog have a second chance after being forgotten.

SPCA Volunteer/Foster Party

The 2009 SPCA Volunteer/Foster Party was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contributions of our volunteers and foster parents.  There were games, great food, lots of story telling and just general fun and relaxation.    As always, a favorite part of the evening was the SPCA award ceremony to recognize the awesome contributions of our volunteers and foster parents to the animals.   See the photo below of our SPCA Award Winners.

Become an SPCA Volunteer or Foster Parent now and you can join the Party in 2010!!!

Darcy, Cosmo and Indra..don't you want to foster?

These sweet little kittens came in last week when a good Samaritan found them under her porch. Darcy, Cosmo and Indra are only 3 weeks old and find themselves sick with an upper respiratory infection. When you visit these sweet kittens you will find them huddled together finding comfort in being loved by one another and it is really touching. These kittens need foster care along with many other kittens in our infirmary being treated with this basic illness. If you don't have the time or space to give to be a foster, please consider making a donation towards the care of the many kittens we will receive this season.

Another way to help!

A great and easy way to help this spring/summer is to purchase a bag of non-clumping clay litter and donate it to the SPCA. One of our major expenses is litter for all the cats and kittens we care for during this time of year. So next time you are at the grocery store or pet supply store, pick up a bag or two of litter. Thanks!

For other needed items check out our wish list on the website under donate.
